We’ve been receiving quite some queries about what the best Portugal running races 2019 are. As this is a frequently asked question, we decided to make a list of our favorite Portugal running races 2019, for the second half of the year. Most of our suggestions are for the Lisbon region because we live here and get to know the races in the area better.
What are the best Portugal running races 2019?
The best running races in Portugal in June 2019 are:
- Marginal à noite – Lisbon – 15/06 – 8K
This running race in Lisbon is a true running party. Along the 8 km on the “marginal” – the road next to the sea from Santo Amaro de Oeiras to Caxias and back.
- Abutres – Miranda do Corvo – 9/06 – 44K
The 9th edition of this mythical event in Portugal will host the 2019 World Trail Championships, where it will define the world champion and will be a unique experience for the participants, as the course will be identical to the world race. The great challenge of 2019 with 2100 D+ over 44 km!
The best running races in Portugal in July 2019 is (there are not many to choose from due to the heat):
- Kayak Trail do Tejo – Constânica – 21/07 – 6K kayak + 10 or 16K trail
Can you imagine how much fun it would be to kayak for 6K and then run 10 or 16K on the prettiest trails of the center of Portugal?
The best running races in Portugal in August 2019 is (there are not many races to choose from due to the heat):
- Ultra Maratona Atlântica – Troia – 4/08 – 43/15K
This is a unique race in Portugal, 100% on the sand, for both distances, being supported by vacationers who are enjoying the beach.
The best running races in Portugal in September 2019 are:
- Corrida do Tejo – Lisboa – 22/09 – 10K
This race is a must if you’re staying in Lisbon in September. Be aware to enrol on time as it gets sold out very early. There are also a few trainings to prepare for this race by the race organization.
- Grande Trail Serra d’Arga – São Lourenço da Montaria – 21/09 – 55 / 37 / 27 / 17K
This trail running race in the North of Portugal is for true mountain lovers. The 55K race has 3000m D+!
The best running races in Portugal in October 2019 are:
- Maratona de Lisboa – Lisbon – 20/10 – 42 / 21 / 6K
We have participated in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon of Lisbon for a few times and we can’t get enough! Given the nice weather conditions and outstanding route, this race is very popular for international runners.
- Triangle Adventure – Azores – 4-6/10 – 100K in 3 stages
The epic Azores Triangle Adventure is a 3 stage-race in 3 days. You’ll discover the most emblematic landscapes of the three islands of the Azorean Triangle: São Jorge, Pico and Faial. In 3 days, you’ll run a total of more than 100K and with a positive slope equivalent to climbing the Everest!
The best running races in Portugal in November 2019 are:
- Maratona do Porto – Porto – 3/11 – 42 / 15 / 6K
The Marathon of Porto is one of the very few ofical road marathons in Portugal. This race is very flat and in November, in Portugal, the weather is ideal for running. Robert Chemonges holds the record of this race with 02:09:05 in 2018.
- Gerês Extreme Marathon – 30/11 – 42 / 32 / 21 / 14K
They call it the world’s toughest road marathon. Do you dare to run 42K on some of Portugal’s most stunning roads and climbing 1350m D+?
The best running races in Portugal in December 2019 are:
- Meia Maratona dos Descobrimentos – Lisbon – 8/12 – 21 / 10K
We really like this half marathon because it is much smaller than the other two main ones and hence is less confusing. Also, the route is very flat and nice, along the Tagus River and passing Lisbon’s city centre.
- São Silvestre Lisboa – Lisbon – 29/12 – 10K
The São Silvestre Race of Lisbon usually takes place on the Saturday after Christmas, at 17h30. The race starts at Avenida da Liberdade, one of the main avenues of the Portuguese Capital and finishes almost on the same place, at Praça dos Restauradores.
